
PRAMATHESH BARUA COLLEGE
The Department of Assamese was begun in 1964 along with the establishment of the college. The department imparts teaching in Higher Secondary and Degree courses both in Arts(1964) and Commerce (1979) stream. Honours/Major subject(under graduate) was introduced in 1966 under Gauhati University. The College along with the department came under deficit grant in aid system in 1969. It was affiliated to the Gauhati University and was recognised under section 2(F) and 12(B)of the UGC Act 1956.
VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT :
The Department is committed to provide the quality education to the students that is possible in a public college of India, to promote their tastes and capabilities, and to widen their mental horizon, as well as to enrich them personally, intellectually, and socially.
MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT :
The mission of the Department is to develop interests in Assamese language, literature and culture, which are core to the lives of most of the people of Assam. The students, with exposure to new ideas and enriched with new ways of knowledge and outlook in the Department, can see and explore noble experience and interpretation in familiar things. The Department aims to build future cultural leaders and creative writers, and tries to broaden the minds of the students with deeper human values and understanding, as well as the respect and commitment for indigenous cultural traditions. The students develop a refined sense of art and culture, become ready to struggle with hurdles of life, and employ their talents, skills and knowledge for the well-being of the nation and humanity.

Among them some distinguished personalities who have contributed in the literary genre of Assamese literature. Dr.Dhiren Das, Dr. D.N.Bhakat are the most profound literatuer who have contributed both in Assamese and Rajbongshi language and literature. Dr. Sunil Kr Dutta and Dr. Gita Sarkar both have literary contribution and have been working in the cultural front of Assam.

Facilities:
The Department has desktop computer, printer with internet facility, audio visual aids and departmental library. It arranges field trips and excursions for Major students. Provision of Group discussions, home assignments, counselling are made for Major students.
Activities:
The department regularly organizes seminar and group discussion, quiz competitions among students within the department.
