The Department of Economics was started in 1964. Initially, the department provided general course in Economics. But, with the growing demand of the student community, honours course was also introduced in the year 1970. Since its inception, the department has been providing quality education at this college. Furthermore, it has been up kept that Economics is a multifaceted subject which truly recognizes the global dimensions that are of increasing importance in today’s diverse socio- economic contexts.
Keeping in view of changing course structure and dynamic syllabus in Economics, the department has indispensable contributions to add value in students’ life. The department always motivates the students to participate in various co-curricular activities such as seminar, field work, survey and so on. Presently, the department is offering the UG degree course (UG-CBCS) as per the regulations of UGC and Gauhati University (Affiliation University). In addition to this, the department is fully committed to the pace of challenging NEW EDUCATION POLICY 2020 in the years to come.

In addition to the above programmes the Department offers courses like HS 1st& H.S. 2nd Year Courses both in Arts and Commerce.
Facilities:
The department has ICT facilities with a desktop computer, printer, and internet facility. It has a departmental library besides the Central Library of the college. The Department has access to audio-visual aids installed in the common classrooms. It arranges field trips and excursions for the students. There are provisions of counselling sessions for the students. In addition to that the students are given exposure to the ICT based classes.
Activities:
Economics Department regularly organizes co-curricular activities like group discussions, seminars, etc. among the students. The department conducts continuous and comprehensive evaluation through home assignments, classroom seminars, internal examinations, project reports on field studies etc. In addition to them the department arrange classes on computer knowledge for the students of Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) in the computer lab of the college.
Research Projects:
Mr. Dulal Chandra Karmakar has completed his first UGC Sponsored Minor Research Project in 2009entitled “A Study of Women Self Help Groups in the District of Dhubri”
Mr. Karmakar hascompletedhis second UGC Sponsored Minor Research Project in 2012 entitled “Structure and Impact of Micro Credit Initiative in Assam: An Inter-district Analysis”
Mr. Hasib Md Iqbal has completed his first UGC Sponsored Minor Research Project in 2011 entitled “Prospect of Food Processing Industry in Assam with special reference to the District of Dhubri and Bongaigaon”
