The Commerce stream at Pramathesh Barua College (P.B. College) was introduced at the Higher Secondary level in 1979 and expanded to a degree course in 1984-85 in response to the demand of Gauripur\'s leading citizens for advanced commerce education. In 2003, the Department of Finance was established to meet the growing interest and aspirations of students in the field.
The Department of Finance has since positioned itself as a leading institution dedicated to excellence in commerce and finance education. Its mission is to nurture skilled, ethical, and innovative finance professionals through a rigorous curriculum, research-driven insights, and an intellectually stimulating environment that fosters personal and professional growth.
The Department offers a Higher Secondary Course under the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) and a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) program with a specialization in Accountancy, affiliated with Gauhati University. The curriculum encompasses a wide range of finance-related topics, including the Indian Financial System, Banking, and Financial Management, ensuring students are well-prepared to meet the challenges of both local and global commerce. Regular updates integrate the latest industry standards and technologies, keeping the programs relevant and forward-looking.
The department owes its strong foundation to its visionary founding faculty, including Prof. Abdus Samad Mojumdar, Samsuddoha Ahmed, Pranab Kr. Barman, and Dr. Anup Kr. Seal, who played a pivotal role in establishing and shaping it into a premier center for commerce education in the region. With the introduction of the semester system under Gauhati University, the department actively engaged in project work and report preparation, enhancing students\' research and analytical skills.
