DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT: 1964

History:

The Department of English was established in 1964. The department offers BA English Honours Courses under the affiliating Gauhati University. The Department also offers General English (as Compulsory Core) both for BA and B.Com Regular Courses. Besides, the Compulsory Courses, such as Communicative English (As AECC), Business Communication, Soft Skills for Business, Alternative English, Elective English (as Generic Elective) have been offered to the students of both BA and B.Com
Regular Courses.

The Department of English has an additional duty to teach English and Alternative English in both HS Arts and Commerce Stream Classes in the college since its inception. Keeping in view of the necessity of improvement in Communicating Skills and Soft Skills among the students, the Department is conducting Certificate Course in Spoken English as Value Added Courses for the students which have been taught to the interested students without hampering the regular classes.

In the era of digital learning, and easy access of internet, android phone, computers and other electronic gadgets by the students’ community, it has been a challenge for the Department to transform from traditional method of teaching to ICT based teaching learning environment in the college. However the Department has initiated an honest attempt to introduce a blended method of teaching-learning in the class room with ICT facilities like Digital Classroom, Smart Classroom and online platforms as well.
The outgoing teachers and present teaching staff and students of the department have extended their sincere and dedicated services for the department. The Department has bright track records of alumni who have worked in different capacity towards development of the state and the country as well. Keeping in view of New Education Policy, 2020 the department feels to take some more initiatives for creating inclusive and skill based teaching learning environment in institution in the time of globalization.

Facilities:

The Department has desktop, printer with internet facility and departmental library. The department has a Language Lab for the students. It also shares the Central Library of the college and uses audio visual aids installed in the common classrooms. It arranges field trips and excursions for Honours Students. A provision of mentoring students is made for all the students on regular basis.
Courses Offered:
HS (Arts & Commerce) Course and
Three Year Degree Course i.e BA Honours and Regular (Semester Courses under UG-CBCS). Besides, the Department offers some courses for B.Com classes.

Activities:

The Department of English organizes group discussion, workshops, classroom seminars among students on regular interval as a part of co-curricular activities.

Research Projects:

The faculty members of the Department have initiated an honest attempt to develop their research studies in the areas of language, literature, art and culture. Three out of four of the permanent faculty members of the Department have already been awarded Ph.D. degree and one has already submitted thesis for the award of Ph.D. degree. Besides, the faculty members of the department have completed UGC sponsored Minor Research Projects. Amitabh Ranjan Kanu had completed UGC Sponsored Minor Research Project in 2015 entitled ‘Poems of Jibananda Das: An Era of Engima’. Taybul Islam Mollah also had completed UGC Sponsored Minor Research Project in 2016 entitled ‘Allen Ginsberg the best Poet: Vision of Life and the Indian Connection’. Kalyan Das also had completed UGC Sponsored Minor Research Project in 2016 entitled ‘Different Realizations of Central vowel and Centering Diphthongs in Assamese English.’
